Gingerbread Stories and Spin Offs

There are loads of fun gingerbread stories out there! In fact, this is my THIRD post of gingerbread books! This year I saved gingerbread for January. It’s hard closing the door on the festivities of December, so this was a fun way to have a little something to look forward to. This *may* have been a book-motivated decision as well… since we were so busy reading Christmassy stories through December 🙂 I pulled out our stack of gingerbread stories after the decorations were packed away and then we built our gingerbread house and decorated gingerbread cookies.

Today I’m sharing the books my now slightly older kiddos enjoyed (age 6 and almost 8). We’re fully past the preschool age range now, and these all held their attention! This became a fun way to learn about different cultures as three of the titles took place in different countries and included glossaries to better understand the text.

PS. All of these tales include the “gingerbread” character being eaten.

Senorita Gordita. We enjoyed the Spanish words sprinkled throughout and identifying the desert creatures as they taunted the runaway gordita.

The Runaway Rice Cake. We learned more about Chinese New Year customs in this tale. The chase scene is much shorter and includes a more robust story.

The Matzo Ball Boy. This tale takes place on the morning of the Passover seder and includes Yiddish words sprinkled throughout.

Gingerbread for Liberty: How a German Baker Helped Win the Revolutionary War. And now for a history tie-in! This book is based on the true story of baker Christopher Ludwick and his role in in the Revolutionary War- not a runaway baked good to be found! A full page biography at the end shares more facts, and truly touched my heart. Ludwick was an inspiring man who gave whatever he could, at his own expense. To this day, the Christopher Ludwick Foundation provides education grants for children in need (that’s over two centuries of giving from his estate! Ludwick’s bequest of $13,000 has grown to almost $5,000,000!).

Books that I’ve listed in previous posts that we read again this year:
