Recent Family Read Alouds {Fall 2023}

I find the fall to be the toughest time for family read alouds. It’s a busy season. The books we squeezed in were great, and I’m glad we managed to complete them!

What we read:

Nothing Else But Miracles by Kate Albus. After reading and loving Albus’s first novel, A Place to Hang the Moon, I was excited to see she released a new book this fall. It kept our attention but wasn’t definitely not a fast paced novel. Like the author’s first, this novel is set during World War II, but this time on the homefront in NYC. Dad has gone off to war, and with their mother having passed before the story begins, the three kids are on their own with their 17 year old brother to stand in for Dad. There were many cultural references that made this a fun way to explore that era of history. The reality of the sacrifices made is deftly handled for the age.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, closely followed by book 2 of the series, The Sea of Monsters (the kids insisted!). To be honest, I was a little anxious starting this series with them. However, my kids are obsessed with Greek mythology (thanks to the Greeking Out podcast) and I’ve been looking for high-interest books to hook my more reluctant middle child. This series for sure did the trick! They loved it. We had fun trying to identify which mythological allusions were popping up when they were first mentioned.

Top Elf by Caleb Zane Huett. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this rather unusual plotline, but it delivered humor, suspense, and lots of festive fun. When Santa is ready to retire and decides to open the position rather than following the family line, he devises an elaborate competition to fill the job.

The Grumpus and His Dastardly, Dreadful Christmas Plan by Alex T. Smith. We loved Smith’s other Christmas novels, and this one was just fine. If you haven’t read the Winston Christmas books, read those instead.

I’m pumped for our 2024 read alouds! I’ve selected a book for school, a book for fun, and an audiobook for the car.

If you’re looking for a GREAT January read for yourself, I highly recommend Stolen Focus! I read it and immediately handed it to my husband who read it and then said, “We need to buy this one.”
