Apple Tasting Printable and Picture Books

After 4 years of Apple Tasting, this Fall activity still hasn’t waned in excitement for my kids! Each year I’ve added an element of “data collection” to layer beside the festiveness and add some sneaky math. This year I finally put our data collection charts into some pretty printables. We ended up dropping them off along with a bag of 5 apple varieties to some friends who were quarantining, and it was fun to compare our findings!

Below you can click to print copies for your own family (and friends)!

Younger tasters may be best suited to the first page (bottom sheet of photo above), recording their ratings from 1-5. Tip: they can use a dot marker (sometimes you can find these as Bingo dotters at the dollar store) to easily mark off their rating. Consider allowing decimals/fractions for older tasters– my kids wanted to rate several as a 3 1/2! When they’re ready for adding decimals or fractions in future years, we’ll include that!

The second page (pictured top above) is a nice extension for older tasters who can try tabulating the data and then add each score to get a total. You can further extend this to have tasters divide to find the “average score” for each apple type.

Our favorite apple books to pair with this activity are:

Out of print: Apples A to Z by Margaret McNamara.

We’re also enjoying this longer book, a “novel in verse,” during our Poetry Teatimes this fall:

Sidenote: did you all know before becoming an adult (as I just found out a few years ago!) that if you cut an apple through the core, it reveals a star? How beautiful is that?!

You may also enjoy my Fall Picture Books roundup if you’re looking for books about the season/seasons changing, pumpkins, or halloween (not scary)!
