Monthly Book Log {October 2018, Age 3.5 and 5.5}

I questioned if I should even post this, but in faithful record keeping, I must! We’ve been distracted by so many picture books this month– primarily following our Around the World Through Folktales journey. A worthy distraction! There are so many delightful picture books and so few picture book reading years ahead of us!

Book(s)

Eugenia Lincoln and the Unexpected Package by Kate DiCamillo. We love Kate DiCamillo, especially her Mercy Watson series (a perennial favorite “first chapter book” recommendation! See my list here.) Eugenia Lincoln is a well known character from that series, and in this spin-off series she returns with a longer plot (substantially longer, far fewer pictures). We’ve read through all of the spin-off series, and this one tied for our favorite alongside of Leory Ninker Saddles Up, which we own on audiobook and have listened to MANY times (we did NOT care for Francine Poulet Meets the Ghost Raccoon). When a mysterious package arrives, Eugenia is intent on returning it but it seems destined for her. The package contents? An accordion!

Audiobook(s)

These Happy Golden Years. Book 8 of the Little House series! This was the final book to be published in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s lifetime. Book #9 was published in its draft form after her death. Reading book 8 as a finale, how could I not tear up at this beautiful ending: “All this was theirs; their own horses, their own cow, their own claim. The many leaves of their little trees rustled softly in the gentle breeze. Twilight faded as the little stars went out and the moon rose and floated upward. Its silvery light flooded the sky and the prairie. The winds that had blown whispering over the grasses all the summer day now lay sleeping, and quietness brooded over the moon-drenched land. ‘It is a wonderful night,’ Almanzo said.
‘It is a beautiful world,’ Laura answered, and in memory she heard the voice of Pa’s fiddle and the echo of a song,
‘Golden years are passing by // These happy, golden years.’
