Our Literate Life

Monthly Book Log May 2018 {Age 5}

While this list looks a bit… meager, there has been much reading taking place this month in our household (and on picnic blankets and on car trips, you get the picture). PreK Bookworm and I were actually quite proud to complete the first Growly series book! At 258 pages and hardly an illustration to be found, this was our longest book to date. PB LOVED it, and I loved our bonding time reading it.

Although it moves a bit slow with long descriptive passages, it kept PB’s five year old attention span well. We read about 20 minutes per day, and he always begged for more. It’s perfect for your outdoor adventure loving bookworms.

In book #1, Growly (the most endearing and relateable bear you could imagine) is preparing to set off on his Adventure as custom of his bear tribe, to survive alone in the wilderness for two months. As he’s about to leave, he receives a cryptic message about his grandfather’s friend, CJ, who was lost many years prior over the great Precipice at the edge of their community. It seems that CJ is alive, but in danger. With that, Growly takes off on his hang-glider to begin his Adventure, when a fierce wind blows him over that same Precipice. He meets some surprising new friends and gathers clues to rescue CJ.

PB and I appreciated that there are no “bad guys” but instead the characters show teamwork and perseverance against incredible obstacles, demonstrating self-sacrifice at each step. The adventure continues in book #2, Widewater (definitely a cliffhanger ending, you can guess what will be on June’s book log! We’re already halfway through.).
